(DailyChive.com) – A 4-year-old girl was found dead, and her 6-year-old sister was recovered on the outskirts of Louisiana near the Mississippi border with small animal cages nearby, which investigators believe were possibly used in human trafficking.
The 36-year-old man, Daniel Callihan, who was arrested in relation to the abduction of the kids, also allegedly killed their 35-year-old mother, Callie Brunett, whom he had previously dated. Burnett was reportedly missing for more than a day before she was found dead in her bedroom.
The Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade stated that law enforcement received an alert of human trafficking of two children, which urged them to start the operation.
The police chief also noted that the close examination of the scene suggests that this place has previously been involved in human trafficking. The presence of small animal cages at the crime scene, Wade continued, is a highly disturbing spectacle for him both as a father and an investigator.
The wounded kid was transferred to a hospital, while the deceased child, whose exact reason for death is still unknown, was already dead in the woods when the police reached the scene.
On June 14, Friday, the police also arrested a 32-year-old female suspect, who they believe helped Callihan in orchestrating the plot. She is now in custody at Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond, Mississippi.
Both the suspects are now being charged with multiple felony counts, including capital murder. If they are found guilty of their charges, both of them face the death penalty.
Callihan has already admitted to murdering the 4-year-old child. Although he has not admitted to killing the mother, investigators believe that he is also the man behind that murder.
Callihan has previously suffered from multiple mental health conditions and has taken antidepressants for a long period of time.
Meanwhile, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards sent his condolences to the affected family and asked community members to remember the family in their prayers.
