(DailyChive.com) – Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts is facing backlash from his own party after speaking out about transgender athletes in women’s sports. His comments, made during an interview with The New York Times, have sparked calls for his resignation and accusations of betrayal.
Moulton, a father of two young daughters, expressed concern about the fairness of allowing transgender women, who were born male, to compete against biological females. “Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest,” he said. “I don’t want my daughters getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat, I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.”
He later doubled down in a statement, insisting his stance isn’t about discrimination but protecting fairness in women’s sports. He called for a broader discussion within the Democratic Party, saying, “We lost the 2024 election, in part, because we shame and belittle too many opinions held by voters. Let’s have these debates now and find a new strategy.”
These remarks have drawn sharp criticism. Massachusetts state Rep. Manny Cruz accused Moulton of scapegoating transgender youth to explain the Democratic Party’s losses, calling it a betrayal of his previous commitments to the LGBTQ community. Salem city Councilor Kyle Davis went even further, demanding Moulton resign.
Others in the Democratic Party have also recently spoken out against transgender athletes in women’s sports. Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York stated, “Democrats have to stop pandering to the far left. I don’t want to discriminate, but biological boys shouldn’t be in girls’ sports.” Similarly, other Democrats, like Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, have defended their stance against such inclusion.
While some Democrats remain firm in advocating for transgender rights in sports, polls suggest most Americans disagree. A June survey found that 69% opposed allowing adult transgender women to compete in women’s sports. Additionally, a United Nations study revealed that nearly 900 female athletes have lost out on medals in international competitions to transgender competitors.
The Biden administration has supported transgender rights, but critics, including prominent Democrats, argue the issue is costing the party votes. As debates within the party continue, Moulton’s comments underscore growing divides over how to balance fairness in sports with broader LGBTQ rights.
Moulton’s stance highlights a belief that Democrats are not listening but instead shutting down necessary debates within the party.
