(DailyChive.com) – A group of 50 protesters found themselves arrested on April 9 after they stormed the Senate cafeteria at the Capitol shouting slogans in support of Gaza.
The Capitol Police reiterated that it is illegal to stage protests or demonstrations inside any Senate building. The demonstrators were charged with “obstructing,” “crowding,” and “incommoding.”
The war between Israel and Hamas has inflamed American passions to a surprising degree, and has fractured the political left. The Democratic Party has long been an ally of Israel, but many rank and file voters believe Israels’ military response to Hamas has been too extreme. Hamas, a terrorist organization, runs Gaza. On October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters breached the Israeli border and slaughtered more than 1,000 innocent Israelis attending an outdoor music festival.
But pro-Gazan Americans are increasingly upset with the Democrats and President Joe Biden; they claim that Israel’s military response constitutes a “genocide.” One April 9 protester wore a shirt that declared, “Biden’s legacy=Genocide.” Others carried signs and chanted about children dying in Gaza, and what they say is a famine.
Demonstrators in several cities have recently shut down roadways and bridges to protest for a cease-fire. Activists in the roadway had San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge shut down for five hours on April 15.
During the demonstration at the Senate cafeteria, one witness told media that Capitol police warned the activists that everyone who didn’t leave would be arrested. According to the witness, one protester shouted back, “This is the house of the people.”
Last month, police arrested more than a dozen protesters who tried a similar tactic in the Senate office building. Gathering in the rotunda, they shouted for a “permanent cease-fire.
One month prior, Capitol police took protesters into custody after the pro-Palestine crowd staged what they call a “die-in” in the rotunda. This is when protesters lie on the ground to appear dead and, presumably, evoke sympathy for the people whose cause they claim to be fighting for.
