(DailyChive.com) – The Campbellsville University community in Kentucky mourns the loss of Josiah Kilman, an 18-year-old freshman athlete found dead in his dorm room on February 24. Authorities have determined that he died from manual strangulation, sparking a community-wide shock and launching a murder investigation.
Kilman, a dedicated wrestling team member, was known for his infectious positivity and unwavering faith. His untimely demise occurred just days before the team was scheduled to compete in a national championship. Remarkably, Kilman’s passing is one of four homicides reported on college campuses across the nation within a ten-day period.
The university, which identifies as a Christian institution, grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event. Kilman’s teammates fondly remember him as a peacemaker and a beacon of positivity. According to his childhood friend, Tyler Gilfry, Kilman was never one to start a fight with anyone. Gilfry reflects on Kilman’s character, suggesting that individuals dealing with their struggles may have harbored jealousy toward Kilman’s exemplary qualities.
The suspect, a 21-year-old fellow wrestling teammate, Charles Escalera, faces charges of murder and burglary in connection with Kilman’s death. The motive behind the crime remains unknown at this time – however, he is currently held on a $2 million bond.
In response to the tragedy, the university has extended counseling services to both students and staff. The Ransdell Chapel remains open for prayer and reflection. During a campus service, Kilman’s father, Joe Kilman, emphasized the transformative power of forgiveness, aligning with the teachings of Jesus.
Despite their grief, the wrestling team remains determined to honor Kilman’s memory by competing in the national championships. Teammates express their commitment to compete on behalf of Kilman’s family, remembering him as a source of positivity and inspiration.
Josiah Kilman’s impact extends beyond the wrestling community to his hometown of Montana. He served as a soccer coach, mentoring younger children, and played a vital role in his local church. O’Brien Byrd, Kilman’s former soccer coach, praises his exceptional leadership qualities, noting his maturity and influence despite his young age.
Kilman’s family seeks support to cover funeral expenses and transport his body home. Donations on GoFundMe have exceeded $65,000.
