(DailyChive.com) – Senator Bernie Sanders didn’t hold back this past weekend when discussing why the Democratic Party suffered losses in recent elections. According to him, it all comes down to one major failure: abandoning the working class.
During an interview on CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash, Sanders addressed criticism from prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. When asked if he still believed the party had let working people down, Sanders didn’t mince words. “Oh, absolutely,” he said.
Sanders, who describes President Biden as a friend and partner on progressive issues, acknowledged Biden’s efforts. “Look, Joe Biden is a friend of mine,” he began. “I have been proud to work with him on an agenda which has been very strongly in favor of the working class. Biden promised to be the most progressive president since FDR. In many ways, on domestic issues, I think he kept his word.”
But Sanders quickly pivoted to the core problem. “The working class of this country is angry, and they have a reason to be angry,” he said. He painted a stark picture of economic inequality in America today. “We are living in an economy where the people on top are doing phenomenally well, while 60 percent of our people are living paycheck to paycheck. Twenty-five percent of elderly people are trying to get by on $15,000 a year or less.”
Sanders argued that this growing divide is fueling frustration and leaving many voters disillusioned. While Democrats have often talked about supporting workers, Sanders suggested they haven’t delivered the changes people desperately need. He believes this failure to connect with the struggles of everyday Americans is costing the party at the ballot box.
The senator’s comments come at a time when both political parties are grappling with how to appeal to working- and middle-class voters. For Sanders, the answer is clear: focus on economic fairness and show people that their voices—and their struggles—truly matter. Whether the Democratic Party will take his advice remains to be seen, but Sanders’ warning is unmistakable: ignore the working class at your own peril.
