(DailyChive.com) – With less than five months remaining in the presidential elections, Joe Biden has finally signed an executive order to close the US Southern border which would still allow 2,500 illegal immigrants daily.
Illegal immigration has become a hot-button issue in the 2024 elections, with almost 55% of Americans believing that illegal aliens pose a significant threat to US interests.
While signing the executive order, Biden stated that he has finally defeated Republicans who wanted not to pass the bipartisan border bill.
According to the executive order, the border will be forcefully closed if 2,500 illegal immigrants per day enter the US for seven consecutive days. This closure will remain in effect for 14 days until the number of illegal immigrants drops to 1,500 per day.
Currently, almost 5,000 people are entering the country illegally on average.
In April this year, 179,725 illegal immigrants attempted entry into America. Although this number is a bit less compared to the same time last year, it still remains significantly high compared to Trump’s era.
Biden used his discretionary powers under section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which permits him to stop some categories of immigrants.
Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has announced plans to take the president to court for what they believe is an unconstitutional attempt for political gains.
Unaccompanied children, immigrants seeking urgent medical care, and those fleeing chronic trafficking are still exempted from the executive order.
Throughout his presidency, Biden remained under severe pressure to at least try to restrict illegal immigration, but he mostly dismissed the Republicans’ concerns and labeled them as a political ploy.
His administration enacted dozens of measures to promote illegal crossings by rolling back stringent immigration policies of the Trump administration. These policies led to an unprecedented immigration crisis that allowed nearly 8 million illegals into the country.
Republicans slammed the president for using political stunts in order to improve his deteriorating approval ratings before the November elections.
