Biden Approves Nearly $1 Billion in Aid to Ukraine as Trump Meets Zelenskyy

(DailyChive.com) – The Biden administration has announced another significant aid package for Ukraine, aiming to bolster its defense against ongoing Russian aggression. This $988 million package, revealed on Saturday, is part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and will provide munitions, drones, and support for equipment maintenance and repair. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke at the Reagan National Defense Forum, affirming the administration’s commitment to Ukraine. He expressed confidence that the late President Reagan would have supported Ukraine’s fight for freedom.

President-elect Donald Trump, who has been critical of the Biden administration’s handling of the war, recently met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris during a ceremony commemorating the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral. Trump has promised to end the war quickly but has not provided details on how he plans to achieve this.

Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, has suggested that Ukraine should consider ceding the land Russia has seized as part of a peace deal, a position Zelenskyy firmly opposes. Zelenskyy has remained vocal about Ukraine’s need for continued U.S. support, warning that a lack of unity could spell disaster for his country. He has also advocated for Ukraine’s membership in NATO as a step toward long-term security.

The Biden administration, meanwhile, is racing to deliver as much aid as possible before Trump takes office in January. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the administration aims to strengthen Ukraine’s position with additional artillery, rockets, and other critical supplies. This latest aid package is the 22nd of its kind, demonstrating the administration’s ongoing efforts to assist Ukraine.

However, not everyone in Washington agrees with the approach. House Speaker Mike Johnson recently blocked a request for $24 billion in additional funding, citing the upcoming leadership change. “It’s not Biden’s decision to make anymore,” Johnson said, signaling that future support will depend on the incoming administration’s strategy.

As the war in Ukraine nears its thousandth day, the world waits to see how U.S. policy will shift under new leadership and what it will mean for Ukraine’s fight for freedom and sovereignty.
