(DailyChive.com) – President Joe Biden stirred up controversy just a week before Election Day by slamming Trump supporters, calling them “garbage,” and overshadowing Vice President Kamala Harris’s big speech.
Harris was set to make her final pitch to voters in front of the White House on Tuesday night, hoping to rally support. But earlier that day, Biden made his own headlines, taking aim at Trump supporters. The Associated Press reported that Biden, when asked if he’d be attending Harris’s speech, said he wouldn’t go because the event was “for her,” although he planned to watch it from home.
The controversy started when Biden responded to a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally, where Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” Biden shot back at this by saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”
NBC reporter Gabe Gutierrez later shared Biden’s full comment. According to Gutierrez, Biden went on to say, “Donald Trump has no character. He doesn’t care about the Latino community…just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage?…The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”
The remarks quickly went public and sparked strong reactions. Biden’s comment seemed to insult millions of Americans who support Trump, and many felt that he was labeling them as less than patriotic. The White House soon tried to soften the statement, claiming Biden was only talking about Hinchcliffe, not Trump supporters in general.
Not surprisingly, Trump’s allies reacted fiercely. JD Vance, a close supporter of Trump, called the statement an insult to half the country. “This is disgusting,” Vance said. “Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country. There’s no excuse for this. I hope Americans reject it.”
Other Trump supporters echoed these criticisms, saying Biden’s words crossed the line and could push the country even further apart.
