Biden Calls for Ban on Assault Weapons After School Attack

(DailyChive.com) – President Joe Biden renewed his call for an “assault weapons” ban on Monday following a handgun-related attack at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. The Associated Press reported on Biden’s statement.

In a statement, Biden said, “From Newtown to Uvalde, Parkland to Madison, to so many other shootings that don’t receive attention – it is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence. We cannot continue to accept it as normal.” The statement was released by the White House.

Biden also highlighted actions taken by his administration to address gun violence. “We passed the most significant gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. I have taken more executive actions to reduce gun violence than any other President in history, and I created the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.”

However, Biden insisted more must be done. He urged Congress to pass “commonsense gun safety laws” such as universal background checks, a national red flag law, and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The Associated Press reported that the Madison shooter was a 17-year-old girl. According to the report, she allegedly used a 9mm handgun in the attack. This raises questions about the effectiveness of Biden’s proposed measures in preventing such incidents. Being under 18, the shooter was already prohibited by law from purchasing a firearm. As a result, point-of-sale background checks wouldn’t have applied, and red flag laws likely wouldn’t have stopped her. Furthermore, the proposed ban on assault weapons wouldn’t have impacted the situation, as a handgun was used. Additional context about the Madison shooting can be found here.

This is not the first time Biden has pushed for an assault weapons ban following a shooting involving other types of firearms. In October 2022, after an attacker in Raleigh, North Carolina, used a shotgun to kill five people, Biden called for the same ban. Similarly, after the February 2023 Michigan State University shooting, which involved a handgun, Biden reiterated his demand for stricter gun control.

Critics argue that Biden’s proposals often fail to align with the specific circumstances of these incidents, leading to questions about their practicality and effectiveness in reducing gun violence.

The debate over gun control continues, with Biden’s latest comments adding fuel to a long-standing and deeply divided issue in the United States.
