(DailyChive.com) – At a farewell dinner on the White House South Lawn, President Joe Biden was visibly moved to tears as First Lady Jill Biden praised his decades-long career in public service. The event, held to thank loyal Democratic supporters, showcased heartfelt tributes to Biden’s legacy, especially his tenure as president.
Jill Biden referred to her husband as both “my husband and my hero,” emphasizing the extraordinary work he has done over the past four decades and highlighting the “breathtaking” achievements of his presidency. Her words brought the president to tears in front of an audience filled with Democratic donors and allies.
Notably absent from the evening was Vice President Kamala Harris, who, after losing the 2024 election to President-elect Donald Trump, is reportedly vacationing in Hawaii with her husband, Doug Emhoff.
The evening began with lighthearted remarks from the First Lady. “If you have a seat, please take it. Don’t jump in the pool!” she joked, setting a warm and casual tone for the gathering. She went on to thank the supporters who had been instrumental in the Biden administration’s journey. “Joe and I are hosting this dinner tonight for a very simple reason: to say thank you. Thank you to so many dear friends,” she said. Reflecting on their shared goals, she added, “We began this journey to redeem the soul of the nation and to find light in the darkness. None of this would have been possible without you.”
During his own speech, President Biden called his presidency “the honor of my life,” quoting the poet William Butler Yeats: “Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, And say my glory was I had such friends.” He expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him, ending with repeated thanks to the crowd.
Biden, who will leave office on January 20, 2025, is the oldest president in U.S. history. His successor, Donald Trump, won the 2024 election in a landslide and will assume office the same day.
