(DailyChive.com) – Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has accused President Joe Biden of using the recent pause on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports as a form of “retaliation” against the state’s efforts to secure its border.
Biden announced this decision on January 26th, coinciding with a standoff between Texas and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over access to Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. The state seized the park earlier this month as part of its Operation Lone Star border security initiative.
Commissioner Buckingham asserts that Texas is America’s largest exporter of natural gas and the third in the world. She adds that the reckless federal decision, coming right after Texas boldly defended its border against foreign invasion, seems more like retaliation than a sound policy decision.
The Biden administration claims the LNG pause is temporary and aligns with its climate change goals. President Biden states that his administration will not be complacent, emphasizing that they will not cede to special interests while accusing MAGA Republicans of willfully denying the urgency of the climate crisis and potentially putting the American people at risk.
However, Buckingham argues that the move would jeopardize Texas’ economy and the well-being of families dependent on the energy sector. She then vowed to consistently champion Texas’ energy independence and advocate for the hardworking families and countless Texas schoolchildren affected by the decision.
The LNG decision adds another layer to the tension between the Biden administration and Texas over border security. In January, the Texas Military Department seized Shelby Park, ejecting Border Patrol agents and prompting the DHS to demand access. Texas defied the order and doubled down on its security measures.
Governor Greg Abbott has also criticized the administration’s energy policies, particularly its proposed re-designation of the Permian Basin, which he calls a “disastrous plan” that could jeopardize jobs and affordable energy prices.
President of the Texas Oil and Gas Association, Todd Staples, said the Texas oil and gas industry continues to play a crucial role in the state’s economy. Furthermore, he mentioned that in 2023 alone, the industry added over 15,000 jobs.
