Biden Wipes Out Loans for 150k Students

(DailyChive.com) – President Biden once again steps into the spotlight in the student loan debate, this time adding a personal touch. More than 150,000 borrowers can expect direct emails from the President, reminding them of his administration’s efforts to alleviate student loan burdens.

According to reports from Politico, taxpayers foot a hefty bill of $1.2 billion for this initiative. Since assuming office in 2021, the Biden administration has wiped out a staggering $138 billion in debt for nearly 4 million borrowers, a move hailed as a significant step towards relieving the financial strain on many Americans.

The email congratulates recipients, informing them that all or a portion of their federal student loans would be forgiven because they qualify for early loan forgiveness under the administration’s SAVE Plan. It boasts of the administration’s commitment from day one to fix student loan programs, ensuring higher education serves as a ticket to the middle class rather than a barrier to opportunity.

President Biden proudly touts his achievements in this arena, listing many accomplishments. The list includes approving nearly $137 billion in debt cancellation for 3.7 million borrowers, securing the largest increase to Pell Grants in a decade, and rectifying the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program to ensure relief for those in public service roles.

A senior administration official underscores the importance of these emails to directly communicate with borrowers, raise awareness of available benefits, and encourage more individuals to take advantage of the relief programs on offer.

However, not everyone applauds Biden’s efforts. Last September, Republicans attempted to halt Biden’s SAVE plan through a Congressional Review Act resolution. The plan, which allows most bachelor’s degree holders to avoid repaying their loans, faced criticism from Republican senators like Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and John Thune of South Dakota.

Meanwhile, Cassidy argued that Biden’s scheme merely shifts the burden from borrowers to those who opted out of college or responsibly repaid their loans. Thune echoes these sentiments, labeling Biden’s approach as a “budget-busting student loan bailout” that unfairly burdens those who didn’t incur student debt.
