(DailyChive.com) – CNN commentator Bakari Sellers recently suggested that President Biden could replace Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with Vice President Kamala Harris. Sellers brought up this idea as a way to ensure a liberal justice stays on the court, given the possibility of a Republican president replacing Sotomayor if she chooses to stay.
During a segment on “CNN News Central,” host John Berman asked Sellers about concerns that if former President Trump is re-elected, he could choose Sotomayor’s replacement, increasing the conservative majority on the Supreme Court. Sotomayor, now 70, is currently the third-oldest member of the court.
Sellers responded that Sotomayor might want to consider stepping down sooner rather than later, comparing her to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who some argue should have retired earlier. Sellers believes that if Sotomayor were to retire soon, Biden and the current Democratic Senate could appoint a new justice before Trump’s possible return. He argued that this could prevent Republicans from strengthening their influence over the court for years to come.
Sellers said, “Justice Sotomayor has been an outstanding justice. But, I hope Biden makes the next ten weeks as impactful as possible. This is within his power, and it’s a real option.” He then suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris, with her legal background, could be an ideal candidate for the Supreme Court. Sellers added, “Let Republicans go wild. This could be one of Biden’s boldest moves.”
Berman seemed surprised by Sellers’ idea and asked him to confirm if he was seriously proposing Harris for the Supreme Court. Sellers doubled down, saying he wanted to “stir up everything” and make the point loud and clear. According to him, this idea would not only safeguard a liberal seat but would also add some “weekend chaos.”
Sellers later posted on social media that he stands by his suggestion. He mentioned other qualified candidates for the Supreme Court, including Sri Srinivasan and Robert Wilkins, but he emphasized that Harris would bring a new level of visibility and energy to the court. He warned that if Democrats wait too long, Sotomayor could face the same fate as Ginsburg, potentially leaving her seat to a conservative successor.
Justice Sotomayor, however, has given no indication that she plans to retire anytime soon.
