(DailyChive.com) – Colorado Governor Jared Polis recently joined Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker to launch a new initiative called Governors Safeguarding Democracy, an effort they say is aimed at protecting the democratic foundations of the country. While the group describes itself as a “nonpartisan alliance,” it’s currently co-chaired by two Democratic governors and has yet to name any Republican participants.
The initiative’s website lists threats like disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks as dangers to democracy. It also emphasizes the importance of preserving institutions like free elections, independent courts, and the rule of law. During a discussion with reporters, Governor Pritzker expressed concern about President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office, claiming Trump now has a stronger understanding of how to use government power and might prioritize loyalty over the law.
Trump, who won the 2024 election decisively, will begin his second term on January 20, 2025. However, Governor Polis said the risks to democracy won’t appear overnight but could build gradually during Trump’s administration. Despite their warnings, Polis noted that he and other state leaders will cooperate with the new administration where possible to support their states.
The Governors Safeguarding Democracy initiative includes a donations page where supporters can contribute to its efforts. Interestingly, the page offers donors the option to select from a wide range of pronouns, such as “Ve/Ver/Vis” and “Xe/Xem/Xyrs,” reflecting an inclusive approach.
Critics, however, have questioned the coalition’s motives, accusing the governors of positioning themselves against Trump rather than focusing solely on nonpartisan goals. The group’s press release avoids directly mentioning the incoming president but emphasizes the need for strong leadership to protect democratic principles for future generations.
When asked for comment, a Trump spokesperson dismissed the concerns, stating that the president-elect’s priority is uniting the country through effective governance and serving all Americans, regardless of political differences.
While the coalition aims to safeguard democracy, its ability to build bipartisan trust and engagement may determine its success. With Trump’s administration just weeks away, the coming months will reveal how both sides navigate this complex political landscape.
