(DailyChive.com) – A former top aide to New York Governor Kathy Hochul and her husband were arrested Tuesday, according to law enforcement sources. The individuals in custody are Linda Sun, who previously worked for Gov. Hochul, and her husband, businessman Chris Hu. The FBI made the arrests, though they have not yet revealed the charges.
The couple was arrested on Long Island, but the specific charges against them remain sealed. Law enforcement sources say this is part of a corruption investigation that is reportedly unrelated to Governor Hochul herself. Sun was initially hired to work for the governor’s office by former Governor Andrew Cuomo before Hochul took over.
This isn’t the first time Sun and Hu have come under scrutiny. In July, the FBI raided their $3.5 million Long Island home. At that time, no charges had been filed, and it wasn’t clear if authorities took anything from the residence, which had been placed in a trust earlier this year.
Sun has held several positions in recent years, including working as a campaign manager for Austin Cheng, a Democrat who ran for New York’s third congressional district. Cheng withdrew from the race in late 2023. Sun has also served in various “diversity officer” roles, including with the New York State Department of Financial Services and the New York State Executive Chamber.
According to NBC, Sun and her husband are expected to appear in a Brooklyn federal court. Although details about the charges are being kept under wraps, some suspect this may be part of a larger investigation involving China. The FBI and the Eastern District of New York have recently been involved in cases related to Chinese influence and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Authorities allege that while serving as Deputy Chief of Staff, Sun and her husband were actually working to benefit the Chinese government. It is claimed that Sun blocked Taiwanese representatives from meeting with top New York officials and altered state messaging to align with Chinese interests. This scheme reportedly earned her family millions of dollars.
The couple’s court appearance is expected to reveal more details about these serious allegations.
