(DailyChive.com) – Two new videos have emerged that captured an attack on a police officer in Missouri during anti-police protests commemorating the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death. The incident led to several arrests, among them a delegate for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) delegate.
On Friday, Aug. 9, protesters gathered in Ferguson to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s death. That event happened 10 days before the beginning of the DNC, and among the protesters arrested was a St. Louis uncommitted alternate DNC delegate named Keith Rose. He was also on the Civilian Oversight Board of St. Louis, a board tasked with reviewing police misconduct allegations.
The Missouri Democratic Party released a statement about the incident and announced that Rose “voluntarily” decided to “withdraw” as a delegate.
The two new videos that came out show two different angles of the incident during which Travis Brown, a Ferguson Police Officer, was hit by Elijah Gantt, 28, just outside the police station. Protesters stormed the perimeter fence and were attempting to tear it down. According to law enforcement, the officer was “fighting for his life” after he was injured.
One video came from CCTV surveillance cameras and another from a police body cam, which was played on Tuesday, Aug. 13, during a news conference. That video showed the suspect running toward the officer and knocking him down. Brown’s head struck the pavement violently, knocking him unconscious. While on his back, the suspect was on top of Brown before other officers intervened.
Police Chief Troy Doyle said it was clear that Brown “was charged” and “hit violently” by the suspect, directing viewers to the footage which he said showed his officer tackled “like he’s a football player.”
Rose, who was at that protest, allegedly helped tear down the perimeter fence around the station and kickers in part of a gate outside the building and faces property damage charges. He was released on $500 bond.
Doyle said the police did not intervene with force against protesters even when they began shaking the fence and were already blocking streets. It wasn’t until they started to dismantle the fence that he deployed an arrest team.
