(DailyChive.com) – A homeowner in Harris County, Texas, shot and killed a man early on Sunday, February 18, after the individual allegedly attempted to steal a BBQ pit from the homeowner’s property, authorities reported.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County posted on social media that authorities received a distress call about an incident around Ralston Rd, Humble, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they confirmed that a man had been shot and was already confirmed dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased man had purportedly tried to steal the homeowner’s BBQ pit. Upon discovering his item had been stolen, the homeowner pursued the suspect in his vehicle.
Upon catching up to the fleeing individual, the homeowner confronted two individuals inside another vehicle. Concerned for his safety and believing that one of the individuals might be armed, the homeowner fired shots from his own gun, striking the suspect.
In a series of tweets, Sheriff Gonzalez provided updates on the incident, confirming the shooting and death of the person who stole the item. He confirmed the identity and detention of the shooter and pit owner and also that he was cooperating with law enforcement. Gonzales said no charges would be brought against the second man in the vehicle.
However, Gonzalez noted that the homeowner provided a detailed statement to investigators, and the case will be referred to a grand jury for further review once the investigation is concluded. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will oversee the case presentation to the grand jury.
The sheriff emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may emerge as police continue to gather information.
Meanwhile, recent incidents involving firearms often raise questions about self-defense and the use of lethal force. The circumstances surrounding this shooting will likely be scrutinized closely as the investigation progresses.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of those involved in the incident, pending further investigation and presenting the case to the grand jury.
