(DailyChive.com) – A Wisconsin community mourns the loss of 35-year-old Steven Nasholm, a husband and father of three, who died in a car accident allegedly caused by a drunk driver. While authorities investigate the incident, the suspect’s immigration status has become a point of contention, further highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding border security and immigration policy.
On January 30th, Nasholm, a truck driver, was involved in a collision with an SUV driven by 22-year-old Jorge Sanchez-Tzanhua. Police suspect Sanchez-Tzanhua was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Nasholm succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind his wife, Stephanie McBain, and their three young daughters.
Nasholm, known for his quick wit and love for family and outdoor activities, was described by his family as a “loving father and husband.” His tragic death comes as a shock to his family and the Rusk County community, who are reeling from the loss and rallying in support of his family. A GoFundMe page created in honor of the deceased for his family has garnered significant contributions to assist Nasholm’s wife and daughters during this difficult time.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Sanchez-Tzanhua, a Mexican national, entered the U.S. illegally several years ago. Reports indicate that he had previously been convicted of drunk driving in Wisconsin in 2023 and faced deportation proceedings. However, he remained in the country, raising questions about possible lapses in enforcement.
ICE officials have placed a detainer on Sanchez-Tzanhua, ensuring his transfer to their custody upon release from Rusk County Jail. The incident has reignited discussions surrounding border security and immigration enforcement, with Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany (R-WI) criticizing President Biden’s current open-border policies and demanding stricter measures. Tiffany questions how many more Americans must lose their lives before President Biden and Democrats take action on border security.
While acknowledging the tragedy of Nasholm’s death, experts urge caution against generalizations about immigrants and crime. Studies indicate that most undocumented immigrants do not commit serious crimes while acknowledging that even isolated incidents have devastating consequences.
