(DailyChive.com) – FBI Director Christopher Wray is planning to step down before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to sources familiar with his plans. Wray, who was originally appointed by Trump, has reportedly decided to resign rather than risk being fired after years of tension between him and the former president.
Trump’s dissatisfaction with Wray has been widely discussed, especially following controversial decisions like the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago. Trump recently nominated Kash Patel, a loyalist known for his critical stance on the FBI’s leadership, to replace Wray.
Wray has also been a controversial figure among Democrats and media allies of President Joe Biden, with some suggesting he should receive a preemptive pardon. Reports indicate that White House lawyers are reviewing the possibility of issuing such pardons, a move that critics say could imply wrongdoing.
According to the Washington Times, if Wray steps down as expected, Deputy Director Paul Abbate will temporarily take charge of the bureau. Abbate’s plan had been to remain in his role through the spring to ensure a smooth leadership transition. However, Wray’s departure may accelerate that timeline.
Kash Patel, Trump’s choice to head the FBI, is already meeting with Republican senators to discuss his potential appointment. Patel has held several high-level positions, including as the Defense Secretary’s Chief of Staff and a senior adviser to the National Security Council. His appointment is widely seen as a move to overhaul the FBI’s leadership and direction.
Wray, for his part, appears to have accepted that his time at the FBI is coming to an end. A source told the Times, “He’s going to be gone at the inauguration. On or before the inauguration.”
While the FBI has not officially commented on Wray’s reported plans to resign, the agency has denied accusations of bias. In a statement, the FBI emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability under Wray’s leadership, claiming the bureau had worked hard to respond to Congressional oversight.
As speculation continues, all eyes are on how the FBI will navigate this high-stakes transition.
