(DailyChive.com) – Emerging football cornerback from Utah State University, Andre Seldon Jr., died of drowning on July 20 in an apparent cliff diving incident at the age of 22.
Local authorities and witnesses reported a man failing to resurface from the water after diving off the cliff in the Porcupine Reservoir, Utah. These reports initiated a search operation in the region, where the Utah Department of Public Safety found the dead body of the athlete.
According to the Cache County Sheriff’s office, the dive teams found Seldon’s dead body around 9:00 pm on July 20, almost seven hours after they were first informed about the incident. The sheriff’s office made thorough investigations and talked to multiple witnesses before concluding that the athlete died of drowning after diving off the cliff.
Earlier this year, Seldon moved to Utah State following a two-season stint at New Mexico State, where he recorded 96 tackles and two interceptions. He was set to appear in the Utah State team this fall under the supervision of the same coach, Nate Dreiling, who also worked with him closely at New Mexico State.
Before his impressive performance at New Mexico State, Seldon played in his home state of Michigan, where he only participated in two games. Both of his former teams sent tribute to the student-athlete as the news of his departure started emerging.
Dreiling, who now serves as the head coach of Utah State, mourned Seldon’s loss, stating that he also worked with him at NM State and he always found him an incredible person. He sent his condolences and prayers to Seldon’s family.
Vice President of Utah State, Diana Sabau, sent his sympathies to Seldon’s loved ones and noted that the college’s football fraternity was devastated by the loss.
Utah State University also announced plans to provide mental and emotional support to the students and staff members of its athletics department to recover from the tragedy that cut short a promising life.
