(DailyChive.com) – The defensive back of the University of Southern Mississippi football team, Marcus Daniels, was fatally shot on June 11.
According to the Hattiesburg police, community members should come forward in order to bring the culprits to justice. The police vowed to share the case proceedings with the public and work with the university officials to resolve the mystery.
Daniels only played one season with the Golden Eagles football team of the University of Southern Mississippi, where his impressive performance made him stand out. He was transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi in 2023 after playing two seasons at the University of Mississippi. In the upcoming 2024 season, Daniels was supposed to be a starter.
Before starting his career in football, Daniels also excelled in basketball and baseball. His impressive athleticism earned him the title of “MJ” among his teammates, referring to the basketball legend Michael Jordan.
As the investigations progressed, three people, including 18-year-old Orlando May, 17-year-old Allen Marcus Gardner, and 16-year-old Samir Green, were arrested and charged with capital murder.
May is also facing charges of eluding felony, grand larceny auto, and carjacking, while Green and Gardner are being charged with attempted carjacking.
Daniels’s family believes that he will be remembered as an impressive athlete whose promising career was cut short by an unfortunate tragedy.
His mother, Adrian Jackson, suggested that her son had no enemy and that she was in regular contact with him. She also added that her son only used to show aggression on the field and was a beloved individual off the field.
Jackson also noted that the police told her that the assailants shot him from behind the car and then entered the vehicle from the back window.
The college sent its condolences to Daniels’s family and teammates and announced to provide counseling to students of the school who were impacted by the murder.
His body has been sent to a medical examiner for autopsy.
