Georgia DA Defends Special Prosecutor Amid Trump Case Controversy

(DailyChive.com) – Fani Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, responded to allegations of misconduct regarding the appointment of special prosecutor Nathan Wade in the state’s case against former President Donald Trump on January 14th. Speaking at the Big Bethel AME Church ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Willis staunchly defended Wade’s qualifications while hinting at potential racial motivations behind the allegations.

The controversy arises from a motion filed last week by Mike Roman, a former Trump campaign official and one of the co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case. Roman’s lawyer alleged an “ongoing, personal, and romantic relationship” between Willis and Wade, claiming the relationship began before the investigation and renders the indictment “fatally defective.”

However, Willis denied any impropriety, emphasizing her right to choose special counsel and highlighting the equal treatment of all three attorneys she appointed. “I hired one white woman, one white man, and one black man, all superstars and great friends,” she stated, declining to name Wade directly but praising his “impeccable credentials” as a judge, lawyer, and prosecutor.

Willis further questioned the motives behind the accusations, pointing to potential racial bias. “Aren’t they the ones playing the race card by singling out only one individual for questioning?” she asked, referring to the focus on Wade. “They’re playing the race card by thinking that I need someone else from another state to tell me how to do my job after 30 years.”

The district attorney openly criticized Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for requesting an “immediate investigation” into her and Wade. “Dear God, I never want to be like Marjorie Taylor Greene,” she declared, denouncing Greene’s alleged lack of contact or understanding. “Why did she think it was okay to treat another woman so badly?”

Adding further complications to the case, Willis confirmed being subpoenaed in Wade’s ongoing divorce proceedings, according to the Wall Street Journal. With a hearing scheduled for February on Roman’s motion, the accusations against Willis and Wade cast a shadow over the Georgia case, potentially impacting Trump’s 13-count indictment.

Meanwhile, Trump has seized upon the allegations, arguing they make the case against him “totally uncompromised.”
