(DailyChive.com) – German authorities are urging for stricter border controls to stem the flow of migrants into the country and the wider Schengen zone. This comes amid concerns that Europe’s porous external borders allow unauthorized entries to surge.
The call to action follows the release of recent federal migration data, which revealed a 38% increase in “unauthorized border crossings” in 2023 compared to the previous year. The figure reached 127,088, surpassing even the arrival numbers witnessed during the second year of the 2015 Europe Migrant Crisis. Only the crisis’s first year, with its 217,000 irregular entries, has seen higher levels of illegal immigration in modern German history, according to the newspaper Die Welt.
Heiko Teggatz, the head of the German Police Union, interpreted the data as a sign of the Schengen system’s failure. He emphasized the need for Germany to bolster its border defenses to protect the country and the integrity of the open-border zone.
However, a spokesperson from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), a coalition partner in the current government, took a different stance. They argued that the rising number of detected illegal crossings actually demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s border security measures. If the plans weren’t working, the logic goes, these individuals would have remained undetected.
The SPD representative further emphasized the importance of immigration for Germany’s economic well-being. “It’s crucial to remember that Germany depends on immigration for its prosperity,” they stated. “Our focus should be on facilitating contributions through regular channels.”
This assertion aligns with a broader belief among some globalist governments that Western nations rely on mass migration for both economic growth and survival. However, this viewpoint faces increasing criticism. Recently, both Geert Wilders, the anticipated incoming Prime Minister of the Netherlands, and Elon Musk, the tech mogul and billionaire, have spoken out against using migration solely as a means to boost GDP, arguing that it comes at the cost of social cohesion and cultural erosion.
Beyond the issue of illegal border crossings, the data also sheds light on the growing number of unauthorized residents within Germany. In 2023, authorities apprehended 48,930 individuals living in the country without proper documentation, overstayed visas, or defying deportation orders. This nearly doubles the figure recorded in 2021.
