(DailyChive.com) – House Republicans urge Attorney General Merrick Garland to provide more information about the Justice Department’s management of potential conflicts of interest concerning Hunter Biden during the corruption trial of a Chinese associate.
On Tuesday, February 20, House Representatives James Comer, Chair of the Oversight Committee, and Jim Jordan, Chair of the Judiciary Committee, penned a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, requesting information about the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) conduct regarding the case involving Chi Ping “Patrick” Ho and its prosecution.
Meanwhile, Ho received a three-year prison sentence in 2019 for his involvement in bribing officials in Uganda and Chad while working for CEFC China Energy.
The lawmakers expressed concern that DOJ prosecutors deliberately omitted Hunter Biden’s involvement despite his connections to Ho and CEFC. They highlighted apparent efforts to distance Hunter Biden from the trial, citing information obtained by their committees indicating prosecutors sought to exclude the Biden name from evidence.
During Ho’s trial, Vuk Jeremic, a former UN General Assembly president, testified as a consultant for CEFC, which Chinese businessman Ye Jianming led. Jeremic revealed efforts to connect the company with prominent figures, including business leaders and politicians.
A pivotal moment occurred during the trial when a prosecutor asked the judge to redact the name of an individual mentioned in an email between Ho and Jeremic, intended as evidence. The Republicans’ letter alleges that the redaction aimed to avoid political consequences, leading them to believe the redacted name was Hunter Biden, who had close ties to Ho and CEFC leading up to the trial.
The letter emphasizes that in the years leading up to and during Ho’s trial, Hunter Biden maintained close ties to both Ho and CEFC. It further scrutinizes Hunter Biden’s business dealings, alleging that he received significant payments without providing clear services. Additionally, it raises questions about a $1 million payment from Ho to Hunter Biden for legal counsel despite Hunter not being a licensed attorney in New York.
Seeking transparency, the lawmakers urged the DOJ to provide the unredacted email between Ho and Jeremic and the contents of Ho’s seized iPad, which they consider crucial to the investigation.
