NYC Mayor Eric Adams Defends Trump, Calls for Calmer Political Talk

(DailyChive.com) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has recently stepped into the national debate, defending former President Donald Trump from claims that he is a “fascist.” Adams, a Democrat, urged people to lower the intensity of political language, saying it’s time to “dial down the temperature.”

During a press conference, Adams was asked if he thought Trump was a fascist. He responded with a clear answer, pointing out that he understands what “Adolf Hitler and true fascist regimes” did in history. Adams explained, “I’ve had those terms hurled at me by some political leaders,” adding that he doesn’t believe calling Trump “fascist” is accurate or helpful.

Adams also noted how extreme language often misses the mark. He said, “It’s not fitting to anyone to say that the former president is equal to Hitler.” The mayor urged people to lower the intensity of their conversations, saying, “We could all dial down the temperature.”

He also shared his thoughts on Trump’s right to hold a rally in New York City, scheduled for Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Adams disagreed with those who think Trump should be banned from public events, stating, “This is America; this is New York.” He explained that as a city, it’s their responsibility to allow people to exercise their rights peacefully. Adams cautioned that the intensity in today’s political environment could make governing more difficult later on, saying, “The heat we turn up today is the heat we’re going to have to govern in.”

Adams’ comments come amidst increasing tensions between Trump supporters and critics. Vice President Kamala Harris recently referenced an article from The Atlantic in her own criticisms of Trump, bringing up past accusations against him. According to The Atlantic, Trump allegedly made offensive comments about the funeral expenses for Vanessa Guillen, a U.S. soldier who had died. The outlet claims Trump became angry over the $60,000 cost, reportedly saying, “It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a Mexican!”

These claims are part of a broader attempt by some Democrats, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and California Governor Gavin Newsom, to paint Trump as a “threat to democracy.” Newsom has even argued that calling Trump a fascist is an understatement, underscoring the growing divide in the American political landscape.
