(DailyChive.com) – Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is finally shouting back at former President Donald Trump after Trump and his allies have repeatedly slammed Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for refusing to fully investigate allegations of electoral impropriety during the 2020 election. Raffensberger and Kemp are both Republicans.
Trump had suggested during a rally days beforehand that Kemp was performing poorly when it came to crime in his state and his refusal to support other Republicans. He said crime in Georgia was a problem with crime in Atlanta extremely bad.
Trump also took a jab at Kemp’s wife, highlighting her claim that she’d write-in Kemp before she voted for him.
Trump also had curt words for Raffensberger, suggesting that he needs to “do his job” and ensure that the election is legitimate.
Kemp responded by suggesting that focusing on the past, attacking allies, and spewing insults is counterproductive toward winning the election in November. He’s popular in the state, with 63% approving of his job performance according to a June poll.
Kemp beat extreme left-leaning Democrat Stacey Abrams for the role in the 2018 governor’s race after he was endorsed by Trump. The election was close, highlighting the purple nature of the state of Georgia. In 2022, Kemp beat Trump-pick former Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) in the Republican primary and also beat Abrams in a rematch by 7.5%.
Trump said that Kemp and his wife did not believe that Kemp could win in 2018 and that without his endorsement, he wouldn’t have. He also suggested Kemp get on the MAGA train and unify with the rest of the party behind his campaign. Trump added that Kemp’s wife told members of the press she wasn’t going to support Trump’s reelection and that she preferred to write-in her husband instead.
Trump also slammed Kemp for allowing District Attorney Fani Willis to prosecute him for allegedly interfering in the state’s election by requesting confirmation of the number of votes he had. He said that Kemp could have shut that down “with a phone call” and called him a bad guy for refusing to do so.
