(DailyChive.com) – Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States, has sparked debates about her stance on guns and health care. While she presents herself as moderate, her past actions, particularly in San Francisco, tell a different story.
Back in 2007, Harris, then San Francisco’s district attorney, played a major role in drafting a strict gun law. This law required legal gun owners to store their firearms safely, and the government had the right to inspect their homes. Harris stated that just because someone legally owns a gun, it doesn’t mean they’re free from being checked. Her goal was to ensure “responsible behavior” in her community.
The law went on to be approved by the city’s board of supervisors, and Mayor Gavin Newsom signed it. San Francisco became known for having some of the toughest gun laws in the country. Among other provisions, the new rules also banned firearms in public housing and required gun dealers to report their inventories to the police twice a year.
Despite this, Harris claims she’s not trying to take away guns. During a presidential debate, she was asked about her views on gun confiscation, and she dismissed the accusation. In fact, Harris revealed that she’s a gun owner herself. Her campaign team has also defended her, saying she supports the Second Amendment but believes in “common-sense safety laws.”
Her shifting positions have drawn criticism. Some, like Senator Bernie Sanders, have accused Harris of abandoning her more radical views just to win elections. She’s also faced backlash for claiming her values haven’t changed, despite having modified her policies over the years.
Harris has long been in conflict with the National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA successfully challenged parts of the San Francisco law in court, but the Supreme Court declined to hear their appeal. Despite this, Harris remains a strong advocate for gun control, believing that these laws help reduce gun violence and improve safety across the country.
