(DailyChive.com) – Since President Joe Biden tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, the media have quickly rallied to her side as she tries to play catch-up after joining the race last minute.
One of her strategies for playing catch-up isn’t to formulate a clear policy agenda, but instead to obscure that agenda while even copying aspects of former President Donald Trump’s campaign proposals to pass them off as her own, such as “no tax on tips.”
Harris first mentioned the idea at a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, Aug. 10, where she spoke to a crowd of supporters that included the Culinary Union Local 226. The vice president promised that she would eliminate taxes on tips for workers in the hospitality and service industries and raise the minimum wage.
Harris acknowledged the union during her speech, which she said led the way for workers’ rights in Nevada and that she was “proud” to work with them as Attorney General in California “for years” and then while in the US Senate. She vowed to continue to fight for “working families” if victorious in November.
A couple of months before Harris did it, Trump promised in a speech he delivered in Las Vegas to eliminate tax on tips if elected for another term in the White House, a promise he’s repeated ever since.
Trump has addressed the vice president copying his ideas, claiming she can’t come up with any of her own and that her promises are only for “political purposes.” The former president said the difference between himself and Harris is that “she won’t do it” and that he will actually follow through with his promises.
On Monday, Aug. 19, Trump spoke at a rally in York, Pennsylvania, at a factory and again accused Harris of stealing his ideas. He also promised not to tax social security and said Harris would most likely copy that idea, too. Trump pointed out her changing positions on other issues as well, such as fracking, noting that Harris supported the practice throughout her time as vice president only to now change her tune.
