(DailyChive.com) – Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has made it clear that she won’t be joining a new group of Democratic governors aimed at opposing President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. The initiative, called Governors Safeguarding Democracy, was recently formed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
The group claims to be a nonpartisan coalition dedicated to protecting democracy at the state level. According to Healey’s office, however, she isn’t interested in signing on. This might surprise some people since Healey’s political career gained momentum through her clashes with Trump during his presidency. Despite that history, she seems to believe existing systems are already in place to do the job this new group is setting out to do.
In her view, the offices of state attorneys general are well-suited to defend states’ rights and protect the people. Healey also insists she represents every resident of Massachusetts — including the 37 percent of voters who supported Trump. That’s a noteworthy stance, especially in a political climate where partisan divisions run deep.
The Governors Safeguarding Democracy effort isn’t operating alone. It’s also collaborating with the Governors Action Alliance, which has ties to Massachusetts. Former Massachusetts governors Deval Patrick, a Democrat, and William Weld, a Republican, both sit on its advisory board. This second group is expected to receive funding described as “philanthropic” by Governor Pritzker, who comes from the wealthy family behind the Hyatt hotel chain.
What’s less clear is whether California Governor Gavin Newsom, often seen as a leading voice of Democratic resistance, will join these efforts. For now, Healey is standing apart from these coalitions, choosing instead to rely on traditional government institutions to handle issues as they arise.
This decision sends a message about her approach to governing. While some Democrats focus on banding together against Trump, Healey appears more focused on maintaining balance and serving all her constituents — whether they supported her or not. Time will tell how this strategy works in the turbulent waters of today’s politics.
