House GOP Seeks to Rename Airport After Trump

(DailyChive.com) – A group of Republican Congressmen has put forward a proposal to rename Washington, D.C.’s primary international airport after former President Donald Trump, sparking both skepticism and support.

The House GOP’s Chief Deputy Whip, Congressman Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, and six cosponsors are spearheading the initiative. They aim to rename the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia to the “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” symbolizing what they perceive as the pinnacle of the nation’s greatness under the former president’s leadership.

Reschenthaler expressed his belief that America had never been greater than under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership. He envisioned hearing “Welcome to Trump International Airport” upon touching down on American soil as an unparalleled symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength for millions of domestic and international travelers passing through the airport.

If the bill passes, all references to the airport in federal laws, regulations, or documents will be replaced with the new name.

Republican congress members Troy Nehls of Texas, Andy Ogles, Charles Fleischmann of Tennessee, Barry Moore of Alabama, Paul Gosar of Arizona, and Michael Waltz of Florida are backing Reschenthaler’s initiative. They argue that renaming Dulles after Trump would be a fitting tribute to his presidency, drawing parallels to the renaming of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, in 1998.

Alabama congressman Barry Moore highlighted Congress’s decision in 1998 to rename the National Airport in Washington in honor of President Ronald Reagan. He argued that extending similar recognition to another esteemed president, Donald J. Trump, would be appropriate. Moore emphasized Trump’s perceived stance against what he described as a “weaponized government” and his efforts to stand for the American people.

Despite the enthusiasm from some Republicans, the bill faces significant hurdles in a Democrat-controlled Senate, where it’s unlikely to gain traction.

Dulles International Airport is a vital transportation hub for international travel and routes not serviced by Reagan National Airport. In 2023, it ranked 33rd among U.S. airports in passenger traffic, with approximately 25 million travelers passing through its gates.
