(DailyChive.com) – Legendary actress Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89. Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, shared the news in a statement through Smith’s publicist, Clair Dobbs. “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in the hospital early this morning, Friday, September 27th” shared the news in a statement.
Maggie was a very private person. The statement said she was surrounded by friends and family in her final moments. “She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” the family added. They also took a moment to thank the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and kindness during her last days surrounded by friends and family.
Maggie Smith was born in Ilford, England, in 1934. She became known for her amazing work in acting, especially her roles as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films became known for her amazing work.
Her acting journey began in 1952 when she appeared as Viola in Twelfth Night at the Oxford Playhouse. Four years later, she made her Broadway debut in New Faces of ‘56 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. She also appeared in her first movie, Child in the House, in 1956.
Smith’s talent soon gained attention. In 1965, she earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Othello. Just four years later, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Throughout her career, which spanned more than 60 years, Smith appeared in numerous films, TV shows, and plays. She won two Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, four Emmys, five Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony Award.
Maggie Smith was married to Beverley Cross until his passing in 1998. She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren, who will remember her as an extraordinary mother and grandmother.
