(DailyChive.com) – A tragic accident in Rochester Hills, Michigan, has left a community mourning the loss of a beloved pastor. On the morning of November 3, Pastor Stephen Singleton was struck by a car while on his daily run. According to his family, Singleton was wearing a reflective vest and using a crosswalk when a driver ran a red light and hit him. The impact was so severe that he suffered extensive injuries, including broken bones and organ damage. After several days on life support, he was declared brain dead on November 8.
The driver involved in the incident was reportedly in the country illegally. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the driver was behind the wheel of a 2013 Ford Focus and possessed a valid foreign driver’s license, which Michigan recognizes as an acceptable form of ID. Despite this, the driver lacked legal status in the U.S. and is now under investigation.
Singleton’s wife of 53 years, Teri, expressed the heartbreak of losing her husband under such circumstances. “I had to sit and watch my husband die in front of me,” she said, adding that knowing the driver is still free is difficult to accept.
Pastor Singleton was deeply loved in his community. Known for his active lifestyle, he participated in marathons like Boston and New York and biked 200 miles annually for charity. Beyond his athleticism, Singleton was a man of unwavering faith and compassion. For over five decades, he served as a pastoral minister for the Archdiocese of Detroit, officiating funerals, helping families in need, and regularly feeding the homeless. His family described him as a “friend to everyone” and someone who “gave freely to all.”
The tragedy has sparked calls for support for Singleton’s family. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover funeral expenses and provide for his wife, who relied on him for daily care.
Authorities are reviewing the case, but no charges have been filed yet. The Singleton family and their community await justice while remembering a man whose life was defined by love and service to others.
