Judge Drops Jan 6 Charges Against Trump After Prosecutor’s Request

(DailyChive.com) – A judge has dismissed charges against President-elect Donald Trump in a high-profile case related to the January 6 U.S. Capitol breach. This decision followed a request made by Special Counsel Jack Smith earlier this week.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan explained in her ruling, “The Government has moved to dismiss the Superseding Indictment without prejudice. Defendant does not oppose the motion, and the court will grant it.” This decision effectively ends one of the key cases Smith had been pursuing against Trump.

Smith also filed to drop his appeal in a separate case involving classified documents. That case had already been thrown out in July when Judge Aileen Cannon ruled Smith’s appointment as special counsel was unlawful.

These legal maneuvers come shortly after Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential election. Smith, signaling earlier this month that he planned to scale back his investigations, filed another motion to vacate all deadlines in the election interference case against Trump in Washington, D.C. While that motion didn’t fully dismiss the charges, it indicated that the case was unlikely to proceed further.

Trump has maintained his innocence throughout these investigations, pleading not guilty to all charges. He argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that he was immune from prosecution for actions taken while serving as president. The court ultimately sided with Trump, ruling he could not be prosecuted for official presidential acts. This forced Smith to issue new indictments, which Trump again denied.

In a statement following the ruling, Steven Cheung, Trump’s spokesman and soon-to-be White House communications director, called the decision a “major victory for the rule of law.” He said, “The American people re-elected President Trump with an overwhelming mandate to Make America Great Again. Today’s decision ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump.”

Trump expressed similar sentiments on Truth Social, calling the cases “empty and lawless.” He criticized the significant taxpayer money spent on investigations, writing, “Over $100 million has been wasted in the Democrats’ fight against their political opponent—me.”

With these developments, Smith is expected to resign as special counsel before Trump’s inauguration. The dismissal marks another significant moment in a series of high-stakes legal battles tied to the former president’s political career.
