(DailyChive.com) – Bill Maher, host of Real Time, couldn’t help but celebrate after pop superstar Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. On his Friday show, Maher was quick to point out the impact of Swift’s endorsement. “Let’s talk about the big news,” he began, “Taylor Swift finally told people who to vote for!”
Maher wasn’t surprised by the reaction. “Of course, the other side is already saying, ‘Celebrity endorsements don’t matter,’” he said. “They’re always behind. Maybe not all endorsements work, but this one is different. Just look at how many people registered to vote after her post.” Indeed, Swift’s influence led to thousands of new voters registering.
Swift’s endorsement, however, sparked mixed reactions. Some praised her, while others saw it as unfortunate. Maher, though, took a bolder stance, saying that Swift has “saved democracy” by throwing her support behind Harris.
Maher then expanded on the power celebrities have in politics today. “We live in a world where people care about what stars think,” he said. As an example, he mentioned George Clooney’s influence in getting Joe Biden to step aside. “I wrote the same opinion, but it wasn’t until Clooney said it that people listened.”
Later in the show, Maher emphasized how her actions were no small matter. In fact, he believes she could “literally swing the election.” Maher said he had hesitated to treat her actions like major news, but now believes they are. “To the MAGA folks,” he warned, “be careful attacking her—she transcends political lines.”
Following a recent debate, Swift took to Instagram to endorse Harris, citing her belief that Harris was the right choice for leading the country calmly rather than with chaos. Over 300,000 people registered to vote after she posted a voter registration link to her millions of followers.
Time will tell how much of an impact Swift’s endorsement will have, but for Maher, the message is clear: celebrities like Swift hold real power in today’s political world.
