Mayor Criticizes Governor’s Racial Remark on Super Bowl Shooters

(DailyChive.com) – Mayor Quinton Lucas directly condemned Missouri State Governor Mike Parson for what he considered a racially charged remark. Lucas accused Parson of using a “dog whistle” by describing the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooters as “thugs.”

During an interview on the local radio show “Up to Date,” Lucas shared his concerns with host Steve Kraske. He revealed that he had personally witnessed similar incidents of alleged racism on multiple occasions.

Following the shooting, Parson declared that they “couldn’t allow some thugs to just take over and ruin what happened.”

The Kansas City Mayor expressed his respect for the governor and their cordial relationship but firmly disagreed with his characterization of the situation. He emphasized that the incident constituted criminal activity and lawlessness, finding the governor’s language deeply troubling. Lucas pointed out that “thugs” is a well-known dog whistle tactic.

He elaborated on the “dog whistle” concept, stating that he had repeatedly observed this tactic. Lucas highlighted a prevalent conservative theory circulating on social media, alleging that the mugshots of the defendants were being withheld because they are Black. He denounced this claim as absurd, citing the legal protections for juveniles. He reiterated to Kraske that he had personally witnessed similar instances of alleged racism on multiple occasions.

The 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri announced that the Office of the Juvenile Officer charged two juveniles in connection with the incident. Both are detained in a secure juvenile facility.

The interview shifted to gun violence, a serious issue in Kansas City. Lucas explained that the suspects’ identities haven’t been released due to their juvenile status, not because of their race, despite facing adult charges for the mass shooting.

In 2021, the Mayor sparked controversy by announcing a $47 million reduction in funding for the KC Police Department. He defended the decision, stating it was based on listening to the concerns of black and brown communities. He downplayed the significance of the cut, criticizing outside voices for suggesting solutions to the city’s crime problems.
