Nikki Haley Shakes Up New Hampshire Debates, Insists on Trump or Biden Presence

(DailyChive.com) – Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has introduced uncertainty into the upcoming New Hampshire debates by declaring her participation contingent on former President Trump’s or President Biden’s involvement. Haley made this announcement on Tuesday, January 16, arguing that Trump, despite his victory in the Iowa caucuses on Monday, must stop “hiding” after avoiding participation in all five GOP primary debates so far.

Haley expressed her position by saying, “We’ve had five debates in this campaign, but Donald Trump has avoided them all. He can’t hide any longer. My next debate will be with either Donald Trump or Joe Biden, and I’m ready for it.”

This declaration raises doubts about the two scheduled debates in New Hampshire, one by ABC News on Thursday and the other on Sunday with CNN. While Haley, Trump, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis were expected to be invited to both events, Trump’s anticipated absence raises questions about the viability of these debates.

DeSantis, who has accepted invitations to participate, criticized Haley’s decision, asserting that she avoids debates because she fears answering “tough questions.” He accused Haley of vying for the role of Trump’s running mate rather than seeking the GOP nomination. He affirmed his commitment to attending the debates, even alongside empty podiums.

Haley’s announcement follows the Iowa caucuses, where Trump secured an easy victory with over 50 percent of the vote. DeSantis narrowly edged out Haley for second place, securing 21 percent to her 19 percent.

Notably, declining viewership in Trump-less Republican debates has become a trend, prompting Haley’s strategic move to insist on his participation. Recent polls show Haley gaining traction in New Hampshire, surpassing 30 percent support in the Hill/Decision Desk HQ average, though Trump maintains a lead with 42 percent. On the other hand, DeSantis has seen a decline in support, falling into single digits in the state.

As the GOP primary in New Hampshire approaches on January 23, Haley and DeSantis remain determined to forge ahead despite their losses in Iowa. In a memo released Monday night, Haley’s campaign manager, Betsy Ankeny, asserted that the Iowa results and New Hampshire polls indicated Trump’s vulnerability and emphasized their commitment to a long and competitive campaign against Trump and Biden.
