(DailyChive.com) – A police officer, who was also a military veteran, was shot and killed in Ohio in the line of duty while responding to a disturbance call on May 11.
The police received a call when a woman complained that the father of her child was threatening to kill her. When the police arrived at the scene, they searched for the suspect who, according to the woman, was likely to be nearby.
The police were finding the suspect when a 24-year-old individual, Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, opened fire on them, resulting in the death of 23-year-old officer, Jacob Derbin.
The suspect fled the scene and initially remained at large before being found dead.
Vaughn, who had already been convicted of a separate crime, was described as a 6-foot-3-inch tall black man. According to police, he had a lot of ammunition, and his cause of death is now being investigated.
EPD chief Scott Meyer called Derbin an incredible personality with a remarkable smile, adding that his departure has saddened the whole police department.
Derbin had been serving in the EPD for ten months.
Before Vaughn’s dead body was found, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost promised to bring him to justice as he praised the sacrifices of law enforcement officers in keeping the communities safe. He also noted that losing an officer just ahead of National Police Week is a significant tragedy, and his heart goes out to the family of the deceased officer.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also praised Derbin’s courage and mourned with the community, which, according to the Governor, has just lost a courageous officer.
On Sunday, May 12, multiple public buildings in Ohio observed the national flags at half-mast to honor the memory of the slain officer.
Derbin was supposed to be married on July 27. Skylar Wuebker, who would have been his brother-in-law, recalled Derbin’s service in both the military and police forces and thanked him for his love for his entire family.
