Officer Confronts Singer Over Christian Music Played Outside Church

(DailyChive.com) – A video showing a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) special constable confronting a young gospel singer for performing on a London street has ignited online outrage and raised concerns about religious freedom in the UK. The incident, involving 20-year-old Harmonie London, has drawn condemnation from politicians, commentators, and Christian groups across the country.

The video, shared by London herself, captures a heated exchange between her and the unnamed special constable, identified by LBC News as Maya Hadzhipetkova. While London sings on a busy Oxford Street corner, Hadzhipetkova approaches and informs her that she is not allowed to sing church songs outside of church grounds. London refutes the claim, insisting that her right to religious expression is protected. The video ends with Hadzhipetkova sticking her tongue out at London.

The MPS initially confirmed the incident and stated they were “working to understand the context.” However, after facing significant backlash, they clarified that the issue might have revolved around busking regulations rather than religious content. According to the Daily Mail, Westminster City Council requires a license for busking in designated areas.

Despite the clarification, concerns about the constable’s conduct and potential prejudice remain. London, who regularly shares her music online, maintains she faced no complaints before the encounter and sang “Amazing Grace” when interrupted. She expressed feeling “humiliated and small” due to the incident.

Andrea Williams, CEO of Christian Concern, highlighted the positive impact of London’s music and expressed shock at her treatment. Claire Pearsall, a political strategist, questioned the police’s priorities, highlighting the need to combat actual crime rather than regulate street performances.

Conservative politician Ann Widdecombe demanded firm action against the constable, citing her unprofessional behavior and apparent lack of knowledge about religious freedom laws. She further raised concerns about potential bias against Christianity, noting the absence of similar actions against other faiths.

The MPS statement acknowledging online negativity and attempting to deflect criticism by labeling some comments “personal and hurtful” sparked further ridicule. Commentators across the political spectrum questioned the “unacceptable” claim, highlighting the public’s right to express their opinions.

However, the incident remains under investigation, with the MPS reviewing footage and Westminster City Council potentially reviewing busking regulations.
