(DailyChive.com) – The Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC) has officially endorsed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 election, saying they believe he is the better choice for improving U.S.-Pakistan relations. In a statement released Thursday, the PAKPAC National Board said they are “proud” to support Trump. They made it clear that while they don’t agree with him on every issue, after extensive discussions with both Trump’s team and Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, they concluded that Trump offers the best chance to improve diplomatic ties between the two countries.
According to PAKPAC, they are also counting on Trump to work toward freeing political prisoners in Pakistan and addressing the country’s growing democratic challenges. “Pakistan is experiencing dangerous democratic backsliding,” the group said, noting that Trump has shown a willingness to engage with Pakistan in ways the Biden-Harris administration has not.
The board pointed out that during Trump’s presidency, he hosted Pakistan’s then-elected Prime Minister during a U.S. visit, which helped create dialogue between the two nations. Trump administration officials also traveled to Pakistan to meet with ministers—an effort PAKPAC says they haven’t seen from the current administration. In contrast, PAKPAC criticized the Biden-Harris team for neglecting Pakistan, blaming them for allowing Pakistan’s government to fall into what they described as a “legislative coup” against the former, democratically elected prime minister. “The administration has done nothing to secure the release of the prime minister and other political prisoners,” the statement added.
PAKPAC also highlighted concerns about election irregularities in Pakistan. They said international observers and even U.S. officials had acknowledged these issues, but the Biden-Harris administration has failed to take action. The group expressed concern that a Harris presidency would continue these same policies, further damaging relations between the U.S. and Pakistan. “After many discussions with the Harris campaign, we fear nothing would change,” the board said.
Ultimately, PAKPAC believes Trump’s leadership would help rebuild trust, promote stronger economic ties, and ensure that Pakistani-American interests are heard at the highest levels of government.
