(DailyChive.com) – Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith confirmed that a shooting in Orlando early Friday left eight people injured, including two who died. The shooting happened around 1 a.m., and police have arrested a 17-year-old suspect, Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, in connection with the incident.
Chief Smith shared details at a press briefing, saying that six of the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment and are in stable condition. The two people who lost their lives were a 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old man. Among the injured, victims range from ages 18 to 39, with injuries varying from leg wounds to a head graze.
According to Chief Smith, police first received reports of gunfire near Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue. Just minutes later, another report came in from an area south of Washington Street on Orange Avenue, indicating that the suspect may have been moving through the area. Police officers responded quickly, and the suspect was soon confronted and tackled to the ground by an officer.
During the press briefing, Smith showed body cam footage capturing the chaos as people fled from the scene. Another video showed an officer bringing down the suspect, a 17-year-old previously arrested in 2023 for grand theft. Despite the intense scene, no shots were fired by the police during the arrest.
The police report provides more details on each victim. Among them were an 18-year-old man shot in the leg, a 39-year-old woman with a hand injury, a 24-year-old woman shot in the leg, a 20-year-old man grazed in the head, a 26-year-old man shot in the foot, and a 19-year-old woman who was shot in the back, with the bullet lodged in her cheek. Another person, a 26-year-old woman, was injured in the chaos as people scrambled to escape, though her case wasn’t initially discussed at the press conference.
As of Friday afternoon, Edgar is facing serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and six counts of attempted first-degree murder.
