Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Dies After Pancreatic Cancer Battle

(DailyChive.com) – Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee died on July 19 after battling pancreatic cancer at the age of 74.

Lee’s family announced her death, stating that they are extremely grieved by her passing but are equally thankful for the inspiring life she lived. The statement further added that Lee’s constituents always appreciated her approachable personality and her dedication to helping people throughout her public service career.

Jackson Lee had been serving the 30th Congressional District of Texas for the past 30 years and emerged as one of the strongest voices advocating for African Americans’ interests on Capitol Hill.

Lee had previously recovered from breast cancer in 2012 after battling it for almost a year.

She announced the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer on June 2 and acknowledged that her journey would not be easy as she prayed to God for strength.

Her office praised her notable career and remembered her as an international humanitarian who made great efforts to fight for criminal justice reforms, end racial disparity, promote human rights, and particularly focus on women’s and children’s rights.

Lawmakers from across the aisle sent their condolences to Jackson Lee’s family. According to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Lee’s historic career was distinguished by her efforts to bring change and make justice accessible for everyone.

House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that despite their policy differences, Lee was his friend and they enjoyed debating each other on law and policy issues.

US Senator from Texas Ted Cruz called Lee an advocate for the people of Houston in the US Congress.

With Jackson Lee’s death, Democrats will have to find a new candidate for this year’s November elections in a district where no notable Democratic politician managed to attract the spotlight due to Jackson Lee’s repetitive election victories. She comfortably won her Democratic primary races and recently defeated former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards by nearly 23% margin, the narrowest margin by which she has won a primary election in her career.
