(DailyChive.com) – Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, is once again throwing his two cents into the wider discourse on American politics leading up to the 2024 presidential election and said he is concerned for his own safety if former US President Donald Trump returns to office for another term, calling on fellow members of the Labour Party to openly support Vice President Kamala Harris.
Khan was interviewed by the New Statesman on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and said he was personally worried about a second Trump presidency in America. The London Mayor’s left-wing sentiments against Trump are well-known and he’s been a long-time critic of the former president.
Khan claims that during Trump’s first term in the White House, he personally experienced “a massive increase in hate crimes” and that he “worries” about what another Trump term “would mean” for himself and his family. The powerful Labour Party leader added that he would “not allow” the former president’s supporters to make him afraid and that it only makes him “more determined” to do his job.
The London mayor broke ranks with his party and argued that Harris deserves their support in November’s election and that they should openly do so. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who was elected in July 2024, took a more neutral position on the election, perhaps in anticipation of a potential Trump administration starting in 2025.
Keir reportedly sent Foreign Secretary David Lammy to meet with allies of the former US president and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. Lammy has criticized Trump recently, so how successful those meetings were remains unclear. The British Foreign Secretary accused Trump of hating women and called him a “neo-Nazi,” and a “sympathizing sociopath” in July.
Khan says he won’t hide his politics and that the Labour Party is a “social democratic party” and that he wants “Democrats to win.” He also pointed out that it’s no secret many members of the Labour Party volunteer for Democratic campaigns in the US and “shouldn’t pretend otherwise.” He said staffers helped the last three Democratic Party presidents – Obama, Clinton, and Biden – during their campaigns.
The London mayor added that he’s been “impressed” with Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, and praised the Vice President’s “judgment,” especially in contrast to “the other guy,” referring to Vance.
