Security Guard Impersonator Attempts to Pull Over a Real Cop

(DailyChive.com) – On November 4, 2023, an alleged police impersonator targeted an off-duty police captain in New Mexico, prompting a swift response from state police determined to quash such acts.

NW Bodycam’s footage on YouTube revealed the unnamed captain driving along Interstate 40 when a security guard, equipped with red and blue flashing lights on his vehicle, attempted a traffic stop. However, as the captain pulled over, the suspect deactivated the lights and continued driving, compelling the captain to call for immediate backup.

The security guard, dressed like a law enforcement officer with a vehicle easily mistaken for a police cruiser, wore a tactical vest complete with a radio, first aid scissors, and other items, adding to the confusion.

Defying authority, the impersonator claimed control and insisted on patrolling a business property, seemingly oblivious that committing a crime on a public road does not grant sanctuary on private grounds.

Refusing to surrender his driver’s license, the situation escalated, leading to his immediate arrest, during which he resisted – behavior reminiscent of notorious criminals. Even after the arrest, the impersonator attempted to lecture the police on the technicalities of their job, a move met with irony and skepticism.

This incident raises pertinent questions about the close resemblance of private security services to law enforcement. While each state has regulations on this matter, concerns persist about whether existing laws adequately address the issue.

Reports suggest that some individuals working in private security are former police rejects or never underwent police academy training, potentially fueling a desire to mimic law enforcement.

This is not the first instance of a security guard being apprehended for impersonating a police officer, and it is unlikely to be the last. Although the charges in this case were initially dismissed on a technicality, state police have refiled, leaving the outcome pending.

The incident underscores the ongoing debate about the appropriateness of private security services closely imitating law enforcement and the potential risks associated with such practices.
