(DailyChive.com) – Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced that he will retire from professional tennis after competing for Spain in the Davis Cup next month. At 38 years old, Nadal has had a career that few can match, placing him among the greatest players in tennis history, alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Nadal, known for his incredible work ethic and passion, won an astonishing 22 Grand Slam titles throughout his career. He also claimed two Olympic gold medals, one in singles and another in doubles. These accomplishments solidify his place as one of the sport’s top champions.
In a heartfelt video posted to his social media, Nadal shared his decision. “Hello everyone, I’m here to let you know I am retiring from professional tennis,” he said. He expressed how difficult the last two years have been due to injuries that kept him out of many major tournaments. Despite his love for the game, Nadal said it’s been hard to play at his best with those physical limitations.
Nadal has been the king of the French Open, winning it 14 times. He also claimed victory at the U.S. Open four times, and twice at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open. On top of that, he won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and again in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. It’s hard to imagine a player with a more impressive record.
But despite all these victories, Nadal’s heart has always been with his country. He was part of four Davis Cup-winning teams and wants to finish his career representing Spain one last time. “I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup. It feels like I’ve come full circle since one of my first big moments was winning the Davis Cup in Sevilla in 2004,” he said.
As he prepares to say goodbye to tennis, Nadal thanked his fans, fellow players, and everyone who supported him throughout his career. He leaves the sport knowing he gave his absolute best.
