(DailyChive.com) – U.S. Senator Tom Cotton threw his weight behind former President Donald Trump’s White House bid, declaring “America has taken a sharp turn downhill” under President Joe Biden.
“I’m backing President Trump and eager to work with him to retake the White House and the Senate, tackling the real challenges Arkansans face under the strain of Biden’s policies,” Cotton told Fox News Wednesday.
Despite facing four criminal cases, including accusations of trying to overturn the 2020 election, taking classified documents from the White House, and falsifying business records, Trump leads the GOP presidential primary. Cotton dismissed these charges as “purely political.”
The senator from Little Rock argued that America was safe, strong, and prosperous under Trump but expressed concern about “families squeezed by skyrocketing grocery bills, a porous border vulnerable to potential invasion, and rising global tensions” under Biden. He urged the country to “get back on track.”
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump’s press secretary from 2017 to 2019, endorsed him in November. Sanders emphasized a shift beyond partisan labels, saying, “It’s not about party lines anymore. It’s about normalcy versus radicalism, and I believe Biden and the left are pushing unconventional policies. We need to return to the Trump-era policies that made America safer, stronger, and more prosperous, like tax cuts, energy independence, and robust military support. That’s why I proudly support Donald Trump for President.”
Cotton’s endorsement comes less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses on January 15, the first contest of the primary season. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer also backed Trump this week. But former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson continues to challenge Trump for the Republican nomination.
Hutchinson launched his “Return to Normal” tour Wednesday, scheduling more than 24 campaign events before the Iowa caucuses. “Iowans have called me ‘normal’ compared to the divisive language and empty promises of some candidates,” Hutchinson said in a statement. He explained that “normal” means going back to the basic conservative principles that guide the Republican Party and our country, like securing our borders, balancing budgets, paying debts, supporting allies, and respecting parents’ role in education.”
While agreeing with many of Trump’s policies, Hutchinson disagreed with his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. He believes Trump’s actions during the January 6 Capitol riot disqualify him from future office.
