(DailyChive.com) – Top Democratic lawmakers, including the ranking members of different House committees, are pushing President Joe Biden to step out of the 2024 White House run.
During the call with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, at least five liberal lawmakers, including Adam Smith, Mark Takano, Jerrold Nadler, Susan Wild, and Don Beyer, agreed that Biden should immediately end his presidential campaign.
There is also a growing consensus among Democratic lawmakers that Vice President Kamala Harris should be the Democratic nominee for the upcoming elections.
While sources within the Democratic party suggested a possible revolt against Biden, Beyer noted that he supports the president against Donald Trump in the November elections and will continue his efforts to campaign for the Biden-Harris ticket.
The lawmakers gathered virtually after Biden’s interview with ABC News, which the White House believed would convince other Democrats that Biden has all the mental capabilities needed to run for the office. However, this interview has further alienated many Democrats who now believe that Trump will certainly beat Biden despite the president’s apparently coherent speech during the ABC interview.
Rep. Rick Larsen, the ranking member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, who also reportedly showed his frustration with Biden’s reelection campaign on the call, now stated that he is not a “dump Biden person” and that he only shared some survey results during the call.
After the call ended, some Democratic lawmakers like Rep. Frederica Wilson noted that Democrats who want Biden to step down should “get their priorities straight” instead of lobbying against the “incredible leader.”
Apart from worrying about the presidential race, many Democratic lawmakers believe that Biden’s presence at the top of the ticket will also hurt Democrats’ chances to win the House and Senate majority.
Meanwhile, Biden has clearly defied the possibility of abandoning his reelection bid, stating that he will only drop out if “Lord Almighty” comes down and asks him to do so.
