(DailyChive.com) – Former President Donald Trump says he will abolish the US Department of Education if reelected and give power back to each state on how to organize their education systems, which is one of the promises he made while speaking with billionaire Elon Musk for a live conversation on Musk’s social media platform X.
Trump and Musk made history on Monday, Aug. 12, when the two had a live phone conversation hosted on Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The conversation had some interruptions in the beginning that may have been technical difficulties or a deliberate attempt to sabotage the event but Musk and X figured out the bugs and eventually got the conversation going.
The two spoke for over two hours and discussed a variety of subjects. Among the topics covered are the southern border, artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the attempted assassination against Trump, and why Trump and Musk both believe Vice President Kamala Harris would be the wrong direction for the country. The two also discussed the education system in America and Trump said he wants “to close the Department of Education” and move planning “back to the states.” Trump reasoned that it would reduce the overall cost of education and increase competition between states to figure out a system that works best.
Trump cited falling test scores compared to other developed nations even though the US spends “more per pupil” than all of them. He told Musk that even if some states “won’t do well” if education is put back into each state’s hands, it would force them “to do better.” Overall, though, he believes most states will do well and that it would “cost less than half” of what Washington charges. Trump added that politicians on Capitol Hill “don’t care” about the students living in “far away states.”
Musk told Trump he made “a good point” and that if each state “has to compete against other states,” it would give people the choice to move “where it’s better” if one state isn’t up to a particular family’s standards.
The talking point isn’t a new one for Trump. Back in 2016, he said the Education Department could “be largely eliminated,” a position former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos also agreed with. GOP Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky praised the suggestion and once again called for the passing of a bill that would eliminate the department.
