Trump to Be Honored as TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year for Second Time

(DailyChive.com) – Former President Donald Trump is expected to be named TIME magazine’s “Person of the Year” once again, according to a report from Politico. The outlet cited three unnamed sources who claim Trump will mark the occasion by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange this Thursday morning.

This wouldn’t be the first time Trump has received the title. In 2016, he was awarded the honor following his surprising victory over Hillary Clinton in the presidential election. This time, the recognition reportedly comes after his historic comeback in the 2024 election, where he defeated President Joe Biden and became the first convicted felon to win the presidency.

TIME magazine explained its reasoning for including Trump in the running. “In a stunning political comeback, Donald Trump reshaped the American electorate,” the publication said. Young male voters played a key role in his victory, helping him win the popular vote for the first time in his career. Trump’s success flipped every swing state to Republican red, cementing his influence on U.S. politics.

The shortlist for the 2024 “Person of the Year” included several other prominent figures. Among them were Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Princess Kate Middleton, Tesla and X owner Elon Musk, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Others considered were Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, and podcast host Joe Rogan.

If the announcement holds true, Trump’s recognition will come amidst significant controversy. Earlier this year, a New York jury convicted him of 34 counts of fraud. Even so, he has made bold promises for his upcoming term, such as imposing tariffs on major trading partners like Canada, Mexico, and China. These plans have sparked debate among economists and policymakers alike.

TIME has awarded the “Person of the Year” title to many influential figures in the past. In recent years, the magazine honored Joe Biden and Kamala Harris (2020), Elon Musk (2021), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (2022), and Taylor Swift (2023). The official announcement is expected Thursday morning, December 12.

This year’s choice is sure to spark lively discussion, just as Trump always does.
