(DailyChive.com) – President-elect Donald Trump has made it clear that he wants the next Republican leader of the Senate to allow recess appointments. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Trump called on GOP lawmakers to support this practice, which has been avoided in recent years by both parties. Recess appointments allow the president to fill important positions without waiting for Senate approval during breaks, but pro forma sessions have kept this from happening.
Trump argued that allowing recess appointments is essential for getting people confirmed quickly. “Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the United States Senate must agree to Recess Appointments,” he wrote. He complained that without this, some votes could take years and warned that Democrats might try to push through judicial nominees before the GOP takes full control.
Currently, several Republicans are competing to replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is stepping down from his leadership role. Candidates include Rick Scott of Florida, John Cornyn of Texas, and John Thune of South Dakota. None have yet been endorsed by Trump, but his comments have stirred reactions among them.
Rick Scott quickly voiced his support for Trump’s demand, promising to do whatever it takes to ensure quick confirmations. Thune also responded, emphasizing the need to act decisively when the new Senate starts working with Trump. He suggested that recess appointments could be a useful tool to overcome Democratic resistance.
Cornyn, another candidate for the role, has also committed to speeding up confirmations. He stated he would keep the Senate in session until Trump’s Cabinet nominees are approved, even if that means working through weekends or holidays. Cornyn further pointed to the Constitution, which allows the president to make recess appointments when the Senate is not in session.
For now, Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, still hold a narrow majority and are working to confirm as many judges as possible before losing control. With this political battle heating up, Trump’s push for recess appointments is shaping the leadership race and setting the stage for a major showdown when the GOP takes over.
