(DailyChive.com) – A young woman from North Carolina, who was studying abroad in South Africa, was found dead after going missing during a solo hike.
Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, had been in South Africa for an internship with a non-governmental organization. On Saturday, she decided to hike up Cape Town’s Table Mountain, according to reports.
Cheuvront was an active hiker, and she often shared her adventures on Instagram. She had recently hiked in other parts of southern Africa, giving the impression that she was experienced with the terrain.
However, things took a tragic turn when the app she used to track her hike stopped updating. Cheuvront was reported missing later that afternoon, and search efforts began.
The search came to a sad conclusion on Sunday when her body was discovered on Devil’s Peak, a mountain connected to Table Mountain. Her body was found around 2:00 p.m., according to local news. Cape Town police confirmed that an EMS helicopter helped retrieve her remains from the area.
Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie, a spokesman for the Western Cape police, stated that an autopsy will be conducted to find out how she died. As of now, the cause of death is unknown.
Cheuvront’s father, Steve, expressed his grief in a Facebook post, writing, “She was recovered. We are devastated. God help me and us.”
Many friends and followers have shared their condolences on social media. One woman, after looking through Cheuvront’s Instagram, said it gave her chills. “She was living fast and bravely,” she wrote.
Others described Cheuvront as a kind and intelligent person who made a lasting impact on everyone she met. One person commented, “I’ll miss your contagious laugh,” while another shared, “She gave a talk at my school… she was such a lovely and smart girl.”
The loss of Brook Cheuvront has left many mourning her sudden and tragic passing.
